Massage techniques are generally described in active terms as sliding, pressing, broadening, kneading, frictioning, tapping, vibrating, stretching, and holding. Through the medium of touch, the practitioner's actions cause movement in the soft tissues of the recipient. Intention is the aim that guides the action, thqt is, what the practitioner hopes to accomplish. Intention helps determine choice of techniques and guides the action in subtle ways. Intention is an essential part of the effective application of massage.
